Sun has finally decided to open all the code Java , absolutely everything, even those portions which held until the last completely inaccessible to the community.
The open source version of Java development framework is called OpenJDK and its use will be completely governed by the GPL .
At the time of writing still remain largely outside of libraries for encryption, graphics, audio, and manage SNMP . It is not a trivial matter, but the team at Sun is working to complete the work. The main consequence will be the release of Java for all GNU / Linux, now opposed because of the previous license of the Java Community Process, which is incompatible with the GPL.
The goals of the Sun are the same as all the major software houses that have recently converted to the philosophy of open: to capture the largest possible number of open source developers, thus counteracting the advance of the other language runtime. A battle that is surely also good for the community and the philosophy that governs it.
