The project has a goal Ksplice more than ambitious: to integrate a Linux operating system layer that allows to apply security updates to the kernel without rebooting.
For those who are familiar with UNIX-like systems, it must be said that a server restart (or even a PC) for each installation of the software is not a normal thing, believe me ... On some of my clients server reboot was performed over a years ago and that everything runs as smooth as it should be.
There are rare situations in which, however, restart the server is required and one of these is the installation of patches that relate to the kernel.
Well, on the website of MIT 's long been a page that promises to eliminate the need for reboot in the event of substantial changes to the Linux kernel!
The American university system engineers are testing Ksplice since 2005.
The results are impressive: the software is able to automatically apply the 84% of the 50 major patches released during this time.
Ksplice was tested on different distributions in both 32 and 64 bits from 2.6.8 until the very last kernel 2.6.25, those who wish can find more information at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, at this address:
Not without problems, since now I no longer possible to insert images in this post.
I will look into the matter when I have a moment of time, but the fact that every WordPress upgrade introduces new problems - nine cast on ten due to the lack of true interoperability with plugins - really annoys me.
For the time being there all right.
Of course, certain things with Drupal does not ever happen to me ...
Update, I am finally able to solve the problem.
Certainly the team Automattic disappointed me a bit ', at least in this circumstance.
Okay so let's see.
Sun has finally decided to open all the code Java , absolutely everything, even those portions which he held until last completely inaccessible to the community.
The open source version of Java development framework called OpenJDK and its use will be completely regulated by the GPL .
At the time of writing still remain largely outside of libraries for encryption, graphics, audio and managing SNMP .
It is not a trivial matter, but the team at Sun is working to complete the work.
The main consequence will be the release of Java for all GNU / Linux, now opposed because of the previous license of the Java Community Process, which is incompatible with the GPL.
The goals of the Sun are the same as all the major software houses that have recently converted to the open philosophy: to capture the largest possible number of open source developers, thus counteracting the advance of other languages runtime.
A battle that is certainly well to the community and the philosophy that governs it.
It is today's press release announcing the official release of PC-BSD 1.5.1, the desktop operating system based on FreeBSD 6: "PC-BSD version 1.5.1 is now available for download as Both ISO and updates from version 1.5.Provides updates to this version the default port set, as well as Numerous bug fixes to the system tools and utilities. Also, additional translations have been added to Provided for more complete localized experience. "I used PC-BSD on test machines for several months and find it an extraordinary product.
First of all because I'm an avid supporter of FreeBSD.
And because the advantages in terms of performance compared to Linux are substantial.
Unfortunately I can not say the same about the compatibility and distribution of s / w, still very, very poor.

I was reading an article appeared today in the online Dragosei Fabrizio's Corriere della Sera .
He captured the subtitle, which I find simply chilling: The newspaper anti-Putin "put your head in place."
The article briefly summarizes Dragosei what happened a few days ago in Sardinia, where our next President of the Council entertained the illustrious and powerful friend.
You read sentences from the unmistakable tone: "It will not be closed, but will instead head to the newspaper last Friday in Sardinia provoked the ire of Putin", "News categorically denied that brought Silvio Berlusconi, [...] to aim the machine gun in the hands atteggiate journalist "," Putin's reaction prompted the editor of Moskovskij Korrespondent, to suspend immediately and lay publications director. "
With embarrassing evidence from the story leaked all over the climate of fear and secrecy that prevails in a country radically undemocratic.
The underlying reasons for Putin might also be good, do not rule it out: bring stability and prosperity in the country instead of letting it tear the interests of the former communist intelligentsia is certainly a noble goal, but the means by which the former head of the KGB is trying to pursue it because they are less alarming.
The article closes Dragosei so emblematic: [...] the vast majority of Russians did not even hear talk about the whole affair. The TV have completely silenced. As they flew over the question of Natalya, the response of Putin and Berlusconi's machine gun.
Well, let's talk about us, then.
Us that we still have the material and intellectual tools to do it.
Moreover, it is just gossip, and gossip like so much to us Italians.
Or not?
The highly anticipated release of Slackware Linux 12.1 is almost upon us: "We now have the Slackware 12.1 RC2 milestone Reached. We're beyond updating packages or fixing minor cosmetic bugs at this point (actually, We had Hoped To Be That past with RC1, but there Were still items in need of attention). What we have here now has proven to be stable for our testers, Unless I know some real Showstoppers are found we'll be releasing this as Slackware 12.1-final soon. "As we read in the changelog, the Linux kernel has been updated to version 2.6.24.5, glibc recompiled with ad hoc.
Were introduced patch for xine-libs due to a possible security hole.
Everything else is well explained, as always, the changelog officers.
A major update to my post yesterday: instead of using the version of `` youtube-dl, which is located in the Debian repository, I highly recommend downloading the latest version found at this address:
This version fixes some problems with it new formats chosen by YouTube to identify the video.
To use the new version simply download it on your workstation (this is a simple text file) and launch it as the following example:
This is the same video I posted a few days ago, but this time the file was downloaded locally and converted to AVI.
Important that the downloaded version no longer appears on the YouTube logo.
For those who want to download a copy of a YouTube video, perhaps to tweak it to your liking, there is a python script packaged with the name `youtube-dl is available in the default repository of Debian GNU / Linux.
To install it on your workstation is usually sufficient to rule while the magic:
# apt-get install youtube-dl
Once installed the package to download videos from YouTube just issue the command:
What you get is a file format Flash Video (FLV), without the YouTube logo, which will be displayed with MPlayer.
If you really want to convert the files to Flash Video (FLV) to xvid (AVI) you can always resort to the mythical `indispensable` ffmpeg:
